Dear Family,
How are you? I'm doing absolutely swell, in fact, you could say that I'm doing peachy keen!
My new companion is soooo awesome, I love him already. He has helped me immensely and I'm so grateful I get to have him as a companion for the next 5 weeks. So Zone leadership is code for more paperwork and more responsibility and more fun I suppose. I'm getting ready to send some stuff home to help me stay consecrated and focused, so that's cool. The Lord really has been looking out for me the whole time. I put my lil' miracle in the weekly letter for you! It's a big one this week ;) I love you!!
This week was an interesting one, lots of paperwork, lots of lack of sleep, lots of late night conversations. My companion's name is Elder Landon Ward, and he is a stud from North Carolina. He is already teaching me a lot about myself and how to become better, and I already love the guy.
Monday, Elder Burrows and I used our Chili's gift card we won at the Stetson Hill's ward Christmas party and ate like kings! We then retired to our abode for a wee bit, napped, and then got destroyed at Monopoly that night, twas grand!
Tuesday, I went on a short little exchange with Elder Johnson, a missionary pal of mine, while I waited for Elder Ward to come to pick me up. It was nice, a member took us out to Kneaders. Elder Ward arrived and we went to the area, and it was sweet. We taught a lesson to an old lady named Julia with another older lady in our ward named Sister Wilson. She is super missionary minded and the lesson went great!
Wednesday, Elder Ward and I hit the paint and started working. We tracted out this apartment complex, but unfortunately, no one was interested. We almost got in a tussle though, which is always fun! As we were walking away from this ladys door, her atheist son comes walking up the stairs. Imagine an angry, combative, bald Stevie Wonder coming at you and asking you in a very colorful way what we were doing there. At this point, I mentally prepare to defend myself, because he is looking pretty hostile for no reason. I simply smile at the guy, and tell him we are talking about Jesus Christ, and at that point, just laughs at us and walks inside. He tries to come back to tell us something, probably that he wanted to be baptized, but his mom wouldn't let him. And he probably didn't want to be baptized. Luckily God looked out for us then.
Thursday it was -4 at some points of the day and put down a few inches so we were parked, which meant that we planned and did paperwork the entire day!
Friday, we had district meeting and subway which was BOMB. I love food, its delicious. Also on Friday, we had a discussion with Layla Castro, an investigator of ours. Elder Ward and I had just gotten done the planning and doing paperwork when we arrived at the member home we were teaching Layla at. Over the next hour, we heard her say things like, "I can't be a part of something that doesn't believe in the Trinity." and other discouraging statements like that. We tried our best to explain our doctrine and back it up with scriptures and evidence but in the end, we left it up to Layla to pray about.
Saturday we went on exchanges with Elder Powell and Elder Guzzo, easily two of my best friends on the mission, so that was a blast. Elder Powell and I had the opportunity to give out a bunch of book of Mormons and pray with a lot of people, so it was a good day! We also met this girl named Low who said the word sendy in the proper form, and it made my day!
Sunday, we got to church and low and behold, two of our investigators are there, including Layla! As the meeting goes on, and we have the opportunity to bare our testimony, a certain girl comes up to the podium at the last second, and begins to tell a story in a most animated way. She had just gotten Chinese food, and before it had arrived, she had prayed and asked God to answer her prayers in a fortune cookie. As she opens the first one up it says "German Proverb: No trees touch the sky" At this point she is very disappointed and is about to give up when the Spirit tells her to try again. As she reaches her hand in the bag, the Spirit again tells her to grab a certain fortune cookie. As she opens it up she reads "He who seeks shall find" This girl was Layla, and God had answered her prayer.
I am so grateful for God in my life, and the relationship I have with Him and my Savior Jesus Christ. I know they live, the Holy Ghost has born witness of it to me. May we all come closer to them.
I love you all and miss you lots!
Love,
Elder Rogers
